I Love my Graphics Tablet!!!

Hello there,

One of the projects I'm working on this year is a short live action sequence, which will include a lot of added effects and background animation.

Today, I have been graphics tableting away, exploring ways in which one of the species of alien could move about. Since I do not yet have the final designs for the alien I'm animating, I've just been experimenting with what I was told by the director. The species is humanoid in appearemce, fast, agile and deadly.

The example below shows how the alien might attack... at least, the way I imagine it anyway.

I will add the link to the production blog for this specific production just as soon as I remember it.

More to come soon.

Oh and... yes, the legs are a bit wrong as it lands.... oh well.

My Own, My Precious, but NOT My Production...

Hi,

As you have no doubt noticed, I haven't posted here for quite a while. This is not because I have given up or died, but rather because I didn't have the sufficient manpower to complete my film last year.

This year however is going to be quite different!

I have elected to focus solely on animation this year so that I can hone my skills without the distraction of having to direct or act as producer etc etc.

Now, this year I have got myself involved in two exciting projects (details of these will be coming soon) and I also have a couple of animation orientated mini projects of my own to throw into the mix too. All in all, it's going to be a busy few months (up until the end of May) at the end of which I should have a rather smashing showreel :-)

The above random outburst is a direct result of me having just recently plugged in my new graphics tablet and wanting to test it out... yes yes, I'll use it to draw something later. The important thing is that I now have an excellent tool for streamlining my animation work flow; no more scanning in :-)

Feeling the Pressure

Hello everyone,

Sorry about the lack of updates, has been difficult to get all the help I needed (workforce), so things have been going slooowly.

In the meantime, check out my Youtube channel http://www.youtube.com/user/splinetingle I haven't uploaded much yet, but check out my favourites, I have tried to make my channel a sort of portal to a lot of less well known animation and animation/film related videos that I've enjoyed.

Pennie's World

Good day to you all! Here are a few quick renders to give you an impression of the general feel of the park in which Pennie's story unfolds.

The above picture is the most recent.

More to come soon, there will be far more posts in the next few weeks I promise ;-)

Various Scribblings

Ok, Now that my film is entering the 'production' phase, I'll be spending far less time drawing, and a lot more time bashing my computer with frustration!
I've pulled together a few more drawings and general concept stuff. For old time's sake :-)

Concept for the look of the well - there are no straight lines in Pennie's world

Trees also struggle to grow straight upwards

The ice cream van as seen in my storyboard. This will replace the ice cream stand from earlier versions.

Sam startles Pennie at the well - from my storyboard.

Big old wide shot - from the storyboard.

3D Turnarounds

Rigging week is over!

Well mostly. This has been a marathon-rigathon-rigfest for me, being my first ever attempt at rigging in 3ds Max using bones. I still have some finishing up to do on the rig (the hair isn't rigged yet) and the skinning needs improvement, but these aren't huge changes and I'm just happy I got through rigging week without having some kind of psychological breakdown! (rigging is not my kind of thing at all).

Here is a turn around of the final texture and a pose to show it's rigged.

For those of you more interested in the mesh, here's a turnaround of that too...

Sorry for any problems loading videos, all google video's fault!

If it doesnt work first time, keep trying until it does.

Pennie is Born!

Woo, it's really getting there, still unfinished and there are some things left to fix, but I'm happy with the progress :-)

Errp, I just noticed a big crease by the nose, that's got to go

2D? - So Last Decade!

So most of the drawing stuff is done now, (more of which I will post later). Here are a few renders of my main character in her new 3D form. She currently looks like a bit of a zombie, not being textured and having no teeth yet.

Model & Action sheets

With a pre-production deadline fast approaching, I think I've got about as far as I'm going to get with my character development. So here are my final model sheets for my characters along with some action sheets.

I must have spent three times as long on the main character (Pennie) than I did on Sam, but somehow I reckon he looks better, ah well.

Writer's Cramp

Yes, it's been a while since my last post, but that doesn't mean nothing has been happening!

Both my story and my characters are under constant development, here are a few more drawings to prove it.

her name is now 'Pennie'

His name is now 'Sam'

I feel like I've done more drawing during these past couple of weeks then I have done for all of my life leading up to them (a handful shown above). Ow my hand.
